Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
